पहली बात जो 90% Hindi summaries नहीं बतातीं: यह किताब Naval Ravikant ने नहीं लिखी।

हाँ — पढ़कर थोड़ा अजीब लगेगा। लेकिन यह सच है। "The Almanack of Naval Ravikant: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness" को Eric Jorgenson नाम के एक writer ने 2020 में compile किया। कैसे? Naval के पिछले 10 साल के tweets, podcasts (Joe Rogan, Tim Ferriss के साथ), और nav.al पर लिखे essays को एक जगह इकट्ठा करके। Naval ने permission दी, Tim Ferriss ने foreword लिखा, Jack Butcher ने illustrations बनाईं।

यह बात क्यों matter करती है? क्योंकि यह "autobiography" नहीं है। यह एक curated collection है — मतलब किसी दूसरे इंसान ने Naval को पढ़ा, सुना, समझा और फिर सबसे useful ideas को 2 parts में divide कर दिया: Part 1 — Wealth. Part 2 — Happiness.

और यही है इसकी ताकत और weakness दोनों।

Naval Ravikant का जन्म 5 November 1974 को Delhi में हुआ। बचपन में ही family USA shift हो गई — New York के Queens area में, modest circumstances में maa के साथ पले। Dartmouth College से Computer Science और Economics की degree ली।

1999 में पहली कंपनी Epinions co-founded की — जो बाद में Shopping.com बनी। यहाँ एक दर्दनाक episode हुआ: VCs ने founders को बताया कि उनके shares की कोई value नहीं है, फिर company IPO हो गई और VCs रईस बन गए। Naval ने Benchmark Capital के against lawsuit फ़ाइल की। यह केस settle हुआ — लेकिन इसने Naval की सोच बदल दी। Ownership, trust, accountability — यह उनकी पूरी philosophy का core बन गया।

2010 में Babak Nivi के साथ AngelList co-founded की। Twitter, Uber, Stack Overflow, Yammer, Clubhouse — सब में early investor रहे।

पर Naval की असली popularity उनके investments से नहीं, उनके tweets और podcasts से आई। 2018 में "How to Get Rich (Without Getting Lucky)" नाम की एक 40-tweet thread viral हुई — यह इस किताब का basically table of contents है।

एक ज़रूरी बात: Naval Hindi नहीं बोलते। बचपन में ही USA move हो गए थे। तो अगर कोई YouTube channel बोलता है "Naval ने Hindi में कहा..." — वो झूठ है। वो English में बोलते हैं, हम translate करते हैं।

Part 1: Wealth — और इसका पहला rule जो सबसे misunderstood है

"Seek wealth, not money or status." — यह Naval का सबसे famous line है।

लेकिन इसका मतलब क्या?

Naval तीन चीज़ों में फ़र्क़ करते हैं:

  • Money = वो tool जिसके through हम value transfer करते हैं। Rupees, dollars — bank balance।
  • Status = social hierarchy में तुम्हारी position। "तू मुझसे बड़ा, मैं तुझसे छोटा।" Zero-sum game — अगर मैं ऊपर जाऊं तो कोई नीचे जाता है।
  • Wealth = assets जो तुम्हारे सोते हुए भी पैसे बनाते हैं। Business ownership, stocks, real estate, IP, royalty।

Salary wealth नहीं है। Salary money है। जब तुम काम करना बंद करते हो, salary बंद हो जाती है। Wealth वो है जो काम न करने पर भी चलती रहे।

Indian context में यह कैसे लागू होता है? Rachana Ranade एक CA थीं। YouTube पर free में finance पढ़ाने लगीं। आज उनके 5 million+ subscribers हैं, course business है, book है। Salary की जगह उन्होंने wealth engine बनाया।

The 4 Types of Leverage — Naval की सबसे powerful framework

यह किताब का दिल है। अगर सिर्फ़ एक concept याद रखना हो तो यह रखो।

Naval कहते हैं — दुनिया में सारी बड़ी wealth leverage से बनी है। Leverage के 4 types हैं:

1. Labour Leverage (Permissioned)

तुम्हारे नीचे लोग काम करते हैं। Tata Steel, Reliance, Infosys — सब labour leverage पर खड़े हैं।

Problem: इसके लिए permission चाहिए। लोगों को hire करना पड़ता है, उन्हें manage करना पड़ता है, salary देनी पड़ती है। Scale करने में decades लगते हैं।

2. Capital Leverage (Permissioned)

तुम दूसरों का पैसा use करते हो अपने idea को scale करने में। Banks, VCs, private equity।

Problem: Capital तुम्हें तब मिलता है जब तुम्हारे पास already track record हो। पहले job में किसी को VC funding नहीं मिलती।

3. Code Leverage (Permissionless)

यहाँ से game बदलता है। Code एक बार लिखो, infinite बार copy हो सकती है। Zero marginal cost।

Indian example: Ola, Swiggy, Zerodha, Dukaan, Razorpay — सारे app-based businesses code leverage हैं। Nithin Kamath (Zerodha) ने बिना किसी outside funding के यह company बनाई — सिर्फ़ code के leverage से।

4. Media Leverage (Permissionless)

YouTube video एक बार record करो, 100 करोड़ लोग देख सकते हैं। Cost zero। Permission zero।

Indian example: Ranveer Allahbadia का BeerBiceps podcast। Sharan Hegde (1% Club) का Instagram content। Ajey Nagar (CarryMinati)। इन सबने media leverage से wealth बनाई — without asking anyone's permission।

Naval की सबसे important line: "Code and media are permissionless leverage. They are the leverage behind the newly rich."

मेरा honest take: यह framework powerful है, but oversold भी है। Media leverage के लिए तुम्हें content engine चलाना पड़ता है — रोज़, साल-दर-साल। ज़्यादातर लोग 3 months में छोड़ देते हैं। Code leverage के लिए technical skill चाहिए — और अच्छे coders की भी पहले 5 साल struggle होती है। "Permissionless" का मतलब "easy" नहीं है।

Specific Knowledge — जो तुम्हें train नहीं किया जा सकता

Naval का दूसरा core concept।

Specific knowledge वो knowledge है जो तुम्हें school या college सिखा नहीं सकते। क्यों? क्योंकि अगर सिखा सकते हैं, तो कोई भी कर लेगा। Commodity बन जाएगी।

Specific knowledge की पहचान:

  1. यह तुम्हारी genuine curiosity से निकलती है
  2. तुम्हें यह काम करना play लगता है, जबकि दूसरों को work लगता है
  3. यह technology + creativity का mix है

Test: तुम 2 बजे रात को किस topic पर YouTube video देखते हो — बिना किसी exam pressure के? उसी में तुम्हारी specific knowledge hidden है।

मेरा personal example — honestly बताता हूँ, मैंने पहले 2 साल तक यह मानकर content बनाया कि "जो trending है वो करूँगा।" Fail हुआ। फिर मैंने वो topics चुने जिन पर मैं already 4 घंटे बिना थके बात कर सकता था — books, behaviour, business psychology। Engagement फ़र्क़ हो गया।

पर यह rule universal नहीं है। अगर तुम्हारी specific knowledge "collecting stamps" है, तो उससे Naval-level wealth नहीं बनेगी। Market size भी matter करता है।

Accountability और Skin in the Game

Naval का तीसरा core idea — "Take accountability under your own name."

मतलब — अपने real name से risk लो। Anonymous मत रहो।

Internet एक जगह है जहाँ लोग anonymous होकर बहुत कुछ कहते हैं। लेकिन जब तुम अपने real name से बोलते हो, तो दो चीज़ें होती हैं:

  1. Consequences तुम्हें face करनी पड़ती हैं (negative)
  2. Rewards भी तुम्हें मिलते हैं (positive)

और long term में, reward > consequence। क्यों? क्योंकि दुनिया में real names के under करने वाले लोग कम हैं। Scarcity premium मिलता है।

Indian example: जब CA Rachana Ranade ने finance पढ़ाना शुरू किया, शुरू में बहुत trolls थे। लेकिन उनका real name, real face, real credentials — यह सब compound हुआ। आज उनका brand unshakeable है।

Part 2: Happiness — जो actually first priority है

Wealth part शायद 60% लोग पढ़ते हैं। Happiness part शायद 20%।

गलत priority है।

Naval का definition: "Happiness is the absence of desire."

जब भी तुम कहते हो "मुझे यह चाहिए" — तुम अपनी current life को थोड़ा reject कर रहे हो। यह reject करना ही unhappiness है। हर "want" एक micro-unhappiness है।

Solution? Desires कम करो। हर desire को conscious choice बनाओ: "क्या यह चीज़ मुझे actually चाहिए, या मैं दूसरों की race में हूँ?"

यह Chanakya से match करता है। Chanakya कहते हैं — "सन्तोष से बड़ा कोई धन नहीं।" Naval कहते हैं — "Happiness is the default state when you have nothing that you desire right now." Same thing, 2300 साल का gap।

Practical habits Naval recommend करते हैं:

  • रोज़ meditation (शुरू में सिर्फ़ 10 minute)
  • रोज़ walk (30-60 minute)
  • Reading > entertainment
  • Deep relationships over wide networks
  • Your body, your spouse, your mind — इन 3 पर पहले invest करो, बाकी सब secondary

कोई भी philosophy perfect नहीं होती। Naval भी नहीं।

1. "Tweet wisdom" की depth kam होती है। जब तुम 280 characters में idea express करते हो, nuance गायब हो जाता है। "Happiness is the absence of desire" — beautiful quote। लेकिन agar तुम्हारी family में कोई sick है, और तुम उनके लिए treatment चाहते हो — वो "desire" कैसे छोड़ोगे? Real life में desires सिर्फ़ consumer wants नहीं हैं।

2. Silicon Valley bias: Naval का ज़्यादातर advice उन लोगों के लिए है जिनके पास पहले से option है — college degree, English, internet access, supportive family। एक Bihar के गाँव में 19 साल की लड़की के लिए "code or media" leverage काफ़ी बाद का concept है। पहले basics चाहिए — education, mobility, safety।

3. "Seek wealth not status" — लेकिन Naval खुद status भी seek करते हैं। Podcasts, interviews, tweets — यह भी status game है। Philosophy और practice में gap होता है।

4. Happiness as "absence of desire" कुछ readers के लिए dangerous है। अगर तुम depression में हो, तो "desire kam karo" advice counter-productive है। वहाँ therapy चाहिए, philosophy नहीं।

यह criticisms इसलिए नहीं कि किताब बेकार है। इसलिए कि कोई भी advice context में आना चाहिए। Naval का खुद का line है: "All advice is survivorship bias."

  • Philosophy और practical action — दोनों enjoy करते हो

Skip करो अगर:

  • तुम student हो, basic career abhi set नहीं है (पहले skill, फिर philosophy)
