10 colors, 15 schemes, 3 tabs।

Mostly right।

SCSS — senior citizens ka sabse powerful product

Eligibility: Age 60+, या 55-60 (VRS retirees within 1 month of retirement), या 50+ (defense retirees).

Key features:

  • Rate: 8.2% — highest among fixed-income govt schemes
  • Quarterly interest payout (auto-credit savings account)
  • Max investment: ₹30 lakh per person (single + joint combined)
  • 80C eligible (Old regime) up to ₹1.5 lakh
  • Premature closure allowed with penalty (1-1.5%)

Math example — ₹15 lakh in SCSS

  • Quarterly interest: ₹15,00,000 × 8.2% ÷ 4 = ₹30,750
  • Monthly average: ₹10,250
  • Total interest over 5 yrs: ~₹6.15 lakh
  • Total payout at maturity: ₹15 lakh principal (if only interest withdrawn)

Fix: Form 15H submit करो (senior citizen, low tax liability) to avoid TDS।

POMIS — guaranteed monthly income

Use case: Regular household expense funding से retirement से।

  • Rate: 7.4%
  • Max: ₹9 lakh single, ₹15 lakh joint
  • Tenure: 5 yrs
  • Monthly payout (not quarterly like SCSS)

Math — ₹15 lakh joint POMIS

  • Monthly interest: ₹15,00,000 × 7.4% ÷ 12 = ₹9,250/month
  • 5-yr total interest: ₹5.55 lakh
  • Principal returns at maturity

SCSS vs POMIS:

SCSSPOMIS
Rate8.2%7.4%
Max₹30L₹15L (joint)
Payout frequencyQuarterlyMonthly
80CYesNo
Penalty premature1-1.5%1-2%

Strategy: SCSS ₹30L + POMIS ₹15L joint = ₹45 lakh deployed in 2 govt schemes giving regular payout.

NSC — 5-yr compound + 80C

NSC का selling point: compound interest (SCSS/POMIS quarterly/monthly payout होता है, NSC में accrues)।

  • Rate: 7.7%
  • Tenure: 5 yrs
  • No upper limit
  • 80C eligible (Old regime)
  • Interest reinvested qualifies for 80C also (except last year)

Math — ₹1.5 lakh NSC

Year-on-year breakdown:

YearOpeningInterest @7.7%Closing
11,50,00011,5501,61,550
21,61,55012,4391,73,989
31,73,98913,3971,87,386
41,87,38614,4292,01,815
52,01,81515,540₹2,17,355

5-yr mein ₹1.5L → ₹2.17 lakh। CAGR roughly 7.7%।

Catch: Interest हर साल taxable (even though reinvested)। Last year का interest is the only year where reinvestment doesn't qualify 80C।

KVP — "paisa double" scheme

KVP का pitch है: "₹1 lakh doubled in 115 months" (9 yrs 7 months)।

  • Rate: 7.5% compounded annually
  • Tenure: 115 months (fixed, till rate changes)
  • No 80C benefit
  • Interest fully taxable
  • No TDS on maturity
  • Premature encashment after 2.5 yrs

Real CAGR math: 7.5% doubling time = 72/7.5 = 9.6 yrs = 115 months ✓

KVP vs NSC

Rate7.7%7.5%
Tenure5 yrs9.58 yrs
80CYesNo
Interest taxYearly accrualLump sum maturity
Use caseTax-saving + 5-yr horizonLong-term no-tax-benefit lock

Honest take: KVP ka unique appeal नहीं है — NSC/PPF/SCSS better options दे रहे हैं same safety पर। KVP skip करो।

Post Office RD — ₹100 se shuru

5-year RD है।

  • Rate: 6.7% quarterly compound
  • Min ₹100/month, no max
  • Tenure 5 yrs
  • Can be extended

Math — ₹5,000 monthly × 60 months

  • Total invested: ₹3,00,000
  • Maturity value: approx ₹3,56,830
  • Interest earned: ₹56,830
  • CAGR effective: ~6.7%

Use case: Low-risk disciplined saving, especially for kids, grandchildren, or people who dont trust MF/equity। But rate low है। Bank RDs (7-7.5%) अक्सर better हैं।

SCSS vs Bank FD — senior citizen FD comparison

SchemeRate (senior citizen)
SCSS8.2%
SBI 5-yr FD (senior)~7.5%
HDFC Bank 5-yr FD (senior)~7.5%
Bajaj Finance Fixed Deposit (senior)~8.6%
Shriram Finance FD (senior)~9.0% (AA+)

Note: Bajaj/Shriram corporate FDs = slight credit risk (though AAA/AA+ rated)। SCSS = sovereign = zero risk।

Rule: Core retirement corpus का 80% sovereign schemes (SCSS, POMIS, PPF, NSC) में। Corporate FD में max 20%।

Senior citizen optimal portfolio — ₹50 lakh corpus

Papa-like retiree with ₹50 lakh. Monthly expense ₹40K। No mortgage, own home।

Suggested distribution

BucketAmountSchemeMonthly / Maturity
Monthly income₹30 lakhSCSS₹20,500 quarterly → ₹6,833/month avg
Monthly income₹15 lakhPOMIS (joint)₹9,250/month
Liquid buffer₹3 lakhSavings + 1-yr FDemergency
Equity growth₹2 lakhBalanced advantage MFlong-term inflation hedge

Total monthly income from fixed: ₹6,833 + ₹9,250 = ₹16,083/month reliable cash flow Plus occasional SCSS quarterly payout + interest from buffer

For ₹40K/month expense — supplement from pension (EPF/APY/old pension) likely covers gap।

Common senior citizen mistakes

  1. Sab kuch SCSS mein — limit ₹30L, so ₹50L+ corpus वाले को POMIS/MF/FD diversification चाहिए
  2. Form 15H submit nahi kiya — TDS cuts quarterly, refund
  3. Joint account se bacha nahi gaya — SCSS/POMIS में joint holding mandatory है spouse के साथ (easier claims on death)
  4. Bajaj/Shriram पूरी रकम FD — corporate risk, SIPC जैसा safety नहीं
  5. Annuity plans insurance agents se kharid liye — SCSS + POMIS better हैं 90% case में

Bank FD vs Post Office — trust question

"Post Office sarkari hai, safe hai" — common perception। Reality:

  • Post Office (DoP): Fully sovereign, Ministry of Finance backed। Zero default risk।
  • SBI/PNB/BoB (PSU banks): DICGC ₹5 lakh insurance per bank. Above that relies on govt bailout.
  • Private banks (HDFC/ICICI/Axis): Same ₹5 lakh DICGC cover.

Post Office में no such limit — full amount sovereign safe.

Senior citizen special: ₹50,000 interest deduction under section 80TTB (applies to all interest: bank, PO, SCSS). Beyond ₹50K — slab rate।

Action steps — aaj parents ke liye kya karo

Agar parents 55+

  1. SCSS status check — खुला है? Max ₹30L तक room है?
  2. POMIS available joint account में? ₹15L तक fill करो
  3. Form 15H submit कर दो सब schemes पर (if total income < taxable limit)
  4. Multiple bank FDs में ₹5 lakh DICGC limit समझो
  5. Equity MF ₹2-3 lakh balanced advantage — inflation hedge zaruri
