₹2,999/saal wali 'Marcellus Consistent Compounders' 15-18% CAGR दिखा रही है last 3 yrs। Lena chahiye?"

Smallcase ka basic

Smallcase = एक theme-based basket of stocks / ETFs, जो SEBI-registered Research Analyst ने curate किया है।

Key facts:

  • Revenue model: free baskets + premium subscriptions + broker referral commissions

Supported brokers (2026): Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, HDFC Securities, ICICI Direct, Kotak, 5paisa, Angel One।

Types of Smallcases

1. Free Smallcases

  • Portfolio ideas, curated by Windmill Capital (Smallcase's in-house team) + independent RAs
  • No subscription fee
  • Examples: "All Weather Investing", "Top 100 Stocks", "Dividend Aristocrats"
  • Cost = only broker's brokerage + exchange fees

2. Subscription Smallcases (Premium)

  • ₹500-5,000/month या ₹2,000-25,000/yr
  • Curated by specialized RAs like Marcellus, Wright Research, Capitalmind, Windmill Momentum
  • Include rebalancing signals, research notes, market commentary
  • Minimum investment typically ₹50K-2 lakh to justify subscription

3. Index-tracker / Thematic

  • Built-in ETF-like themes — e.g., "Nifty Next 50 basket", "Banking + Financials"
  • Mid-way between passive index and active stock picking

Top performers 2024-26 (3-yr CAGR)

Caveat: past returns, point-in-time, NOT guaranteed future.

SmallcaseType3-yr CAGRVolatility
Marcellus Consistent CompoundersSubscription (₹2,999/yr)~15-18%Moderate
Windmill All Weather InvestingFree~12-14%Low (multi-asset)
Wright Alpha FuturisticSubscription~20-25%High
Capitalmind MomentumSubscription~18-22%High (rotates fast)
Windmill Forever Young PortfolioFree~14-16%Moderate
Naked Trader Low BetaSubscription~13-15%Low

Caveat explained: Many subscription smallcases show cherry-picked 3-yr window (starting at market low, ending at peak)। Since-inception + worst 12-month rolling always check करो।

Marcellus Consistent Compounders का example:

  • 3-yr (Apr 2023 - Apr 2026): ~17% CAGR
  • Since inception (2017): ~11% CAGR
  • Worst 12-month: -28% (March 2020)

Smallcase ka biggest advantage — Tax Loss Harvesting

Direct stocks hold karte हो — तो individual losers को financial year end से पहले sell करके STCG losses book कर सकते हो, जो अन्य STCG gains से set-off होंगे।

Example:

  • STCG profits ₹80K, losses ₹30K realized
  • Net STCG taxable: ₹50K (not ₹80K)
  • Tax saved at 15% (STCG rate): ₹4,500

Equity MF me ye trick possible nahi — आप MF units redeem करोगे तो fund level portfolio reset नहीं होता।

Smallcase ka biggest disadvantage — Rebalancing tax cost

High turnover smallcase में manager frequently rebalance करता है:

  • Momentum smallcases: 40-60% turnover/yr — many small STCG hits
  • Each rebalance = stocks sold + bought = STCG + brokerage + STT

Thumb rule: High-turnover smallcase में long-term hold करना tax-inefficient है।

Cost structure — real numbers

Free smallcase, ₹1 lakh investment, 20 stocks:

ItemAmount
Broker brokerage (₹20 × 20 stocks)₹400
STT (0.1% of ₹1L)₹100
Exchange fees + GST₹60
Total entry cost₹560 (~0.56%)

Plus 2-3 rebalances/yr × ~₹400 each = ₹800-1,200/yr ongoing।

Subscription smallcase, ₹2 lakh investment, ₹4,999/yr sub:

ItemAmount
Subscription fee₹4,999
Entry brokerage + fees₹800
Yearly rebalance costs₹1,600
Total Year 1 cost₹7,399 (~3.7%)

At ₹2L portfolio, 3.7% cost = eating 2/3rd of alpha। Subscription smallcases ₹5L+ portfolio ke liye hi justify होती हैं।

Subscription stacking — middle-class trap

Instagram reels और Twitter gurus 3-4 smallcases stack करवाते हैं — "Momentum + Quality + Value + Dividend" combo।

Math:

  • 4 smallcases × ₹3,000/yr average = ₹12,000/yr
  • Portfolio ₹1.5 lakh × ~12% return = ₹18,000 gross
  • Subscription eats 67% of gross return
  • Plus brokerage, taxes — often net negative vs simple Nifty 50 index fund

Rule: Max 1 subscription smallcase + free ones for diversification।

DIY Path — smallcase ke bina

Smallcase bina hi similar portfolio बनाना possible है, completely free:

Theme 1: Quality / Large-cap

  • Direct: HDFC Bank + Reliance + TCS + ITC + Asian Paints + Nestle India + L&T + Titan + Infosys + Bajaj Finance
  • Cost: 10 × ₹20 brokerage = ₹200 one-time
  • Alternative ETF: NIFTYBEES (Nifty 50 ETF) — single trade, ~0.05% expense

Theme 2: Dividend

  • HDFC Bank + ITC + Coal India + Hero MotoCorp + Vedanta + Power Grid + NTPC + ONGC
  • Avg dividend yield 3-5%
  • Cost: ~₹160 one-time

Theme 3: EV / Renewables

  • Tata Power + Tata Motors + Reliance + NTPC Green + Waaree Energies + Suzlon
  • ETF alternative: HDFC Defence ETF or Mirae ETF Nifty EV & New Age Automotive (if available)

Theme 4: All-Weather (balanced)

  • 60% Nifty 50 ETF (NIFTYBEES)
  • 20% Gold ETF (GOLDBEES)
  • 15% Debt ETF (BHARATBOND or similar)
  • 5% International (Motilal Oswal Nasdaq 100 ETF)

Cost DIY: ~₹500-1,000 total one-time + 1-2 rebalances/yr manually।

DIY ka advantage: full control, zero subscription, complete tax loss harvesting flexibility।

DIY ka disadvantage: weekly market reading, rebalance discipline, no research handholding।

Kab smallcase use karna chahiye

✅ Use smallcase when:

  • Portfolio size ₹5 lakh+ (subscription cost amortizes)
  • Theme research nahi karna — expert curation chahiye
  • Want direct stock ownership (tax harvesting advantage)
  • Broker integration sahulat deti hai
  • Long-term investor, low-turnover smallcase picked

❌ Skip smallcase when:

  • Portfolio < ₹1 lakh
  • Beginner without demat management comfort
  • High turnover smallcase (momentum) → MF better tax-wise
  • Want SIP mode with auto-debit
  • Can research own themes (DIY is cheaper)

Tax treatment summary

Direct stocks held via smallcase:

  • Short-term (<12 months): STCG @ 20% (post Jul 2024 rules)
  • Long-term (>12 months): LTCG @ 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh/yr exemption
  • Dividends: Taxable at slab in hands of investor
  • Tax loss harvesting: allowed against any STCG / LTCG of listed equity

Equity MF:

  • Same STCG/LTCG rates as direct equity
  • NO tax loss harvesting at individual stock level

Subscription fee: NOT tax-deductible for personal investors (business users may claim differently)।

Red flags while choosing a smallcase

  1. Only 3-yr performance shown — demand since-inception data
  2. High turnover ratio (>40%/yr) — tax drag high
  3. RA name unknown, no SEBI number visible — avoid
  4. "Consistent 25%+ CAGR claims" — impossible long-term, cherry-picked
  5. Small-cap / micro-cap dominant — illiquidity risk in exit
  6. No clear benchmark comparison (vs Nifty, vs sector index)
  7. Hidden exit load या high rebalance fees beyond subscription
  8. Creator active on social media pump — neutral red flag

Illiquid exit risk — real story

Framework — smallcase apply

  1. Portfolio size ₹5L+? (subscription justify)
  2. Since-inception CAGR > benchmark + 3%?
  3. Worst 12-month < -30%? (acceptable volatility)
  4. Turnover < 30%/yr? (tax efficient)
  5. RA SEBI registration verified?
  6. Stocks mostly large/mid cap? (liquidity safe)
  7. Clear rebalance frequency? (quarterly ideal, monthly = too reactive)

5+ green = consider subscribing। 3 or less = DIY similar theme।

Hindi me equity investing framework

Smallcase ek tool hai, equity wealth creation का main framework fundamental analysis + long-term SIP + asset allocation है।

Plus Finance Mastery Combo (FMC) में equity + debt + gold + real estate integrated allocation — 4 books combo।

Smallcase is curated DIY, not magic। Beginner ho to free baskets
