Worker categories (CRITICAL distinction): (a) Permanent / Regular workmen — direct payroll, statutory benefits (PF, ESI, gratuity, paid leave, union representation), union-negotiated wage settlement, stable career, retirement at 58-60. (b) Fixed-term contract / FTC — direct company payroll on fixed-term agreement (typically 1-3 yrs), most statutory benefits but no permanency. (c) Contract labour / through contractor — third-party agency (Quess, TeamLease, Manpower, etc.) — lower pay, basic ESI/PF but often delayed, no union representation, contractor-managed performance, layoffs without notice. (d) Apprentice / Trainee — fixed stipend, 1-3 yr training, post-training absorption sometimes (Maruti GTT — Graduate Trainee scheme legendary), often NOT absorbed. (e) Daily-wage casuals — unorganised, no benefits.
