SMART acronym 1981 mein George T. Doran (consultant) ne 'Management Review' magazine mein publish kiya. Original meaning: Specific, Measurable, Assignable, Realistic, Time-related. Aaj zyada common version: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. Concept simple hai — har goal ko inn 5 filters se nikalo. Agar ek bhi miss hua, goal vague hai aur execute nahi hoga.
Indian context mein SMART framework specially helpful hai kyunki hum culturally vague goals mein comfortable hote hain — 'achha banna hai', 'kuch achha karna hai', 'life mein settle hona hai'. SMART aapko force karta hai ki aap actual numbers, dates, aur measurable outcomes mein soche. 'Main fit hona chahta hoon' SMART nahi hai. 'Main 6 mahine mein 78 kg se 70 kg pohonchunga, hafte mein 5 din 30 minute exercise karke aur weekly weigh-in karke' — yeh SMART hai.
Log sochte hain SMART goals corporate gimmick hai — sirf appraisals mein use karne wali cheez. Galat. Yeh ek simple cognitive tool hai jo brain ko clarity deta hai. Specific — kya exactly chahiye? Measurable — kaise pata chalega ki ho gaya? Achievable — current resources mein realistic hai? Relevant — bigger life vision se connected hai? Time-bound — by when?
SMART framework ka biggest critique yeh hai ki 'Achievable' constraint bahut conservative bana sakta hai — log apne aap ko under-estimate karte hain. Iska upgrade SMARTER framework hai — Evaluated aur Reviewed add karke, taaki regular check-ins mein goal adjust hota rahe. SMART ek starting point hai — beginners ke liye golden, lekin advanced practitioners 'OKRs' ya '90-day sprints' pe shift karte hain.
