Questions

How many kanji are on the JLPT N5?

The JLPT has not published an official kanji list since 2010. Popular N5 lists have about 80 kanji. This page covers those, marked “core N5”, plus kanji that N5 reading passages use often — most of them are on N4 lists — so you meet fewer strangers in the exam.

What is the difference between on'yomi and kun'yomi?

On'yomi is the reading that came from Chinese (written here in katakana, e.g. 日 ニチ nichi); it is used mostly in compound words like 日本 nihon. Kun'yomi is the native Japanese reading (written in hiragana, e.g. 日 ひ hi); it is used when the kanji stands alone or with hiragana endings.

Do I need to know every reading of every kanji for N5?

No. You need to recognise the kanji in common N5 words and know how those words are read. Learning kanji inside words — 日本, 毎日, 日曜日 — is faster than memorising readings on their own.

Do I need to write kanji for the JLPT?

No. The JLPT is multiple choice and has no writing section. Writing each kanji a few times still helps you remember it.

How long does it take to learn the N5 kanji?

At five kanji a day with a short daily review, about three to four weeks for this list.
